What on Earth are Green Skills?

The term Green Skills has been around for several years now; it is regularly discussed in research papers and government policy documents. But what actually are they? Do they matter and how are they related to ESG, the Circular Economy and Sustainability?

Here at Traineasy, we think of green skills as the combination of knowledge and expertise required in job sectors related to environmental sustainability. Job sectors like renewable energy, climate change mitigation, and conservation. In addition to this, green skills such as Carbon Literacy, green finance and sustainability reporting, are essential for all industries where environmental responsibility and sustainable practices are a priority – and let’s face it, are there any industries now where that isn’t the case?

Net Zero: Opportunity Knocks

The UK is an amazing place, with cities rich in history, museums, parks, bodies of water and fabulous countryside.  Transitioning towards net zero presents numerous opportunities for both individuals and businesses, which – when seized – will make the UK an even more desirable place to live, visit and work.

There are huge opportunities for individuals and organisations to contribute to environmental sustainability, whilst also driving the UK’s economic growth and innovation – if only everyone involved had the right kind of knowledge!

Increasing Demand for Green Skills

As organisations, businesses and governments move towards the commitment of Net Zero by 2050, or even earlier, new sectors and roles (such as Carbon Manager) that require green skills are increasingly in demand. Additionally, ordinary employees, whatever their role, also need green skills – why? Because if they don’t acquire them, employers will not be able to develop low carbon cultures and reach other sustainability goals needed for them to thrive into the future.

Indeed, a new LinkedIn report published on 19th September has revealed that although the demand for green skills is predicted to double by 2050, the current supply is failing to keep pace.

The report concludes, “Every job may one day become a green job. Bankers will need to understand emissions trading and sustainability reporting. Automakers will need to be well-versed in electric batteries. Software engineers will need to understand the environmental impact of new technologies.

As companies — and countries — strive to meet sustainability goals, the demand for green skills will only increase. To prepare your company for the future, think about hiring or upskilling for the green economy now. Yes, it’s good for business. But mostly, the planet’s future depends upon it.”
